Adverse Driving Conditions

12/01/2010

With the snow and ice likely to continue for some time there are very important considerations as to use of vehicles.

As reported on Sky News on the 5th January 2010 criminals are actively stealing vehicles left to thaw on driveways etc. with the ignition switched on.

From a personal safety perspective we are aware of cases in previous years where people are injured or even killed whilst trying to prevent such a theft.

STARTING UP

Please make sure all vehicle users are aware that they must not leave the ignition key/device in or on their vehicle as motor insurance will not apply in these circumstances.

DRIVING

Lancashire Police have issued the following statement :
Be extremely careful while driving – leaving a large distance from the vehicle in front and drive as though roads have not been treated. Drive at an appropriate speed, plan your journey and only travel if you really have to.

From the Highways Agency :
It can take up to ten times longer to stop in snowy and icy weather conditions, while sudden sharp turns, acceleration and braking should be avoided to prevent a vehicle going out of control.

Even when roads have been treated, drivers should still take care, especially on stretches where the local road layout or landscape means there could be a greater risk of ice forming.
